Something a little different for the blog today. I’ve decided to do a few posts featuring fellow wedding vendors that I think are awesome. It’s a way of helping you find some of the other people that you might want to hire for your special day but also to find out a bit more about how they work and to get any helpful hints that they might share. As a photographer I also find myself in the position of having photographs of these peoples work and I think its nice to give some credit to the folks that help make my job even better on the day.

So first up is the wonderful Emma Williams who is a make-up artist based near Northwich in Cheshire. Emma did the make-up for Laura, Laura’s Mum and her bridesmaids at Mark and Laura’s wedding in April, which is how we met. I thought Laura looked completely amazing. She is obviously pretty gorgeous anyway but Emma did a fantastic job of making her look flawless but still natural. A perfect bridal look. (You can see the rest of Laura’s wedding here.)

Occasionally my brides will do their own make-up but more often they book a make-up artist so that they can relax on the day. One of Emma’s main pieces of advice is to book your preferred make-up artist as soon as you can. She says “We get booked up in advance as much as any other wedding supplier. Often hair and make-up is the last thing a bride thinks of and this can lead to disappointment when you find out the person you want is already booked. I have also had lots of people call me last minute because their make-up artist has let them down. My advice when booking someone is look at their work online, read their reviews, have a chat with them on the phone. It’s your special day and you need to be sure you find someone you trust and feel at ease with.”

She also recommends a trial session. “I always recommend a trial for the bride, her wedding is a very important day where she will be the centre of attention and photographed a lot and she wants to look her very best. At the trial we spend time going over what she wants to achieve from her make-up and perfecting the look so that when the day comes she knows exactly what to expect and it’s a lovely, relaxing experience for everyone. I recommend having a trial at least six weeks before the wedding date if you can.”

Emma completed a bridal/photographic make-up course at a private London-based school eight years ago. She then worked as an assistant manager of a busy department store concession for a high profile cosmetics brand. She says “Here I gained valuable experience of working with different skin tones and types and it gave me the stepping stone I needed to set up my own freelance make-up business five years ago. Since then I have added to my qualifications by completing airbrush training and in-house training sessions with various make-up brands.”

She uses airbrush foundation on most of her brides, “it’s waterproof, feels light on the skin and gives a flawless finish which photographs beautifully. A good primer and waterproof mascara is also a must for your wedding day so your make-up will last all day through the emotion, joy and dancing.”

Emma also offers prom, special occasion and photographic make-up. “I’ve done everything from photographic make up for a well known entertainment company to celebrity weddings. You can also book me for a make-up lesson if you wish to learn more about the techniques required to apply your make-up properly or are just confused about different products and what to use to make the most of your features. “

You can contact Emma by email: or call 07912531977. Her website is or you can see her work on Facebook:

And lastly some advice for everyone. “It’s important to make sure you are following a skincare routine as make-up looks its best on a good canvas. Cleanse your skin, exfoliate regularly and use a good moisturiser every day.”

Thank you, so much Emma. It’s great to get an insight into how some of my fellow wedding suppliers work and I look forward to photographing more of your beautiful brides in the future.
