Manchester Wedding Photography Workshop

Early in April I was lucky enough to be able to join Neil Redfern and Bee and Liam Crawley for their Redfern Crawley United Manchester wedding photography workshop. This was a superb chance to see how wedding photographers at the top of their game really work. There is no substitute for getting out there with your camera and if you can do that with super pros like Neil and Liam to help and advise you, you end up with a fantastic learning experience and some great pictures too! I find it so encouraging to meet successful and talented photographers who are open and generous with their knowledge and really are happy to help others.

Neil, Bee and Liam also run a business workshop that I attended last year. That was a great experience and I learnt huge amounts so I was very happy to be able to join them for the shooting workshop and this time learn some more practical skills. For models we had the amazing Lawsons. I have to admit to being a little intimidated about photographing such awesome photographers but they are gorgeous, lovely people who were able to chip in with lots of help and advice too. Also we had the very lovely Julia who has modelled for Neil before and made our jobs that much easier by knowing how to pose. We worked around the hotel and in the streets of Manchester nearby. We split into small groups and everyone got to work with both photographers. We worked with natural light, flash, reflections, shadows, foregrounds, posing, video lights and much more. I even got to try Neil’s new Ice Light which I have been thinking about buying so that was a bonus! We also led in the road and moved a lot of pot plants around! Bee provided an excellent lunch, lots of tea, an outstanding cake and let us in on her processing secrets. We all aspire to be wediting queens like Bee! Everyone was great fun and it was lovely to make new photographer friends as well as catch up with some old ones!

I have been investing in my photography education this year and have attended a few workshops and courses. What I am finding is that everyone sees and shoots differently and that leads to a particular style that becomes that photographers trademark. When you attend a course the images that you come away with are naturally influenced by the style of that photographer. As you attend more courses and are inspired by lots of different people you start to gather the techniques and creative ideas that you most enjoy. Gradually, from that, your own style emerges. I’m so excited about the direction that my photography is headed in at the moment and I owe huge thanks to Neil, Liam and Bee for helping me on my journey x
